How to Use a Muslin Swaddle for Your Newborn (and When to Stop)

Many newborns settle more easily when they're snugly wrapped. A swaddle can calm the startle reflex that wakes babies up and recreates the cosy, contained feeling of the womb. Done safely, it can be a helpful part of the newborn weeks.

The short answer: wrap your baby snugly around the arms and chest but loosely around the hips, always place a swaddled baby on their back to sleep, use a breathable fabric like muslin to avoid overheating, and stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of trying to roll.

Why muslin for swaddling

A swaddle covers most of your baby's body, so the fabric matters, especially in warm Indian weather. Muslin's open weave lets heat escape, and a large square gives enough fabric to wrap securely. Our organic muslin swaddle is 100 x 100 cm (₹279).

How to swaddle, step by step

  1. Lay it out: spread the swaddle in a diamond shape and fold the top corner down about a hand's width.
  2. Position your baby: lay your baby on their back with their shoulders just below the fold.
  3. First side: hold your baby's right arm gently straight at their side, bring the right side of the swaddle across the body and tuck it under the left side.
  4. Bottom: fold the bottom corner up loosely over the feet, leaving room for the legs to bend.
  5. Second side: bring the left side across and tuck it under your baby's back.
  6. Check the fit: you should be able to slide two or three fingers between the swaddle and your baby's chest, and the legs should bend up and out freely.

Safe swaddling checklist

  • Back to sleep: always place a swaddled baby on their back, on a firm, flat surface with no pillows or loose bedding.
  • Loose at the hips: tight wrapping around the legs can affect healthy hip development. Legs should be able to bend up and out.
  • Not too warm: dress your baby lightly under the swaddle. Sweaty hair, damp skin or flushed cheeks mean they're too warm.
  • Face clear: keep the swaddle below your baby's shoulders and away from the face.

When to stop swaddling

Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of trying to roll over, which can happen from around two months. A swaddled baby who rolls onto their tummy may not be able to roll back. Ask your paediatrician if you're unsure.

After that, your swaddle is still useful: as a light blanket for supervised naps, a nursing cover, a stroller cover or a quick towel. See more uses of muslin cloth.

Frequently asked questions

Is swaddling safe in hot weather?

It can be, if you use a light, breathable fabric like muslin, dress your baby lightly underneath and check often for overheating. On very hot nights, a light jabla alone may be more comfortable.

How many swaddles does a newborn need?

Two or three is a good number, so one can be in use, one in the wash and one spare for spit-ups.

What size swaddle is best for a newborn?

A large square of around 100 x 100 cm gives enough fabric to wrap securely and tuck in, and stays useful as a light blanket later.
